We offer a variety of engineering consulting services and turnkey solutions including performance contracting and other design-build retrofit services. Our projects include K-12 schools, recreation centers, higher education, correctional facilities, healthcare facilities, offices, and other private, nonprofit, and public sector (state and local government) buildings.

Position Summary

Iconergy seeks to add an HVAC Design Engineer to our design-build team. The successful candidate will be able to independently assess existing HVAC systems for operational efficiency and design HVAC systems for retrofit in existing buildings from conceptual design through construction.

You will service a portfolio of consulting and design-build retrofit projects that improve facility operations, especially energy and/or water efficiency. Our projects also incorporate renewable energy whenever possible. The projects often address the following systems: HVAC, controls, water fixtures, lighting, ancillary systems and equipment (distributed generation, cooking kitchens, pools, etc.), and renewable energy (solar PV, solar thermal, etc.) systems, and metering systems (energy, water, sub-metering, etc.). These projects improve the occupancy conditions inside the facilities while reducing operating and maintenance costs and the use of natural resources.

You will support sales staff on the presentation of engineering reports to the client to receive approval to move forward with the project. Your ability to communicate effectively, to make well-informed decisions independently, and to deliver on your commitments will directly affect our collective success.

A day in the life of the successful candidate:

You will serve as the lead design engineer for HVAC design efforts, as well as support other energy efficiency measure development, which includes:

  • Survey existing buildings and document as-built conditions in the field.
  • Develop conceptual design alternatives and provide analytical comparisons to support the selection of specific designs.
  • Perform HVAC load calculations and develop equipment schedules for mechanical systems.
  • Produce design drawings in AutoCAD.
  • Coordinate designs with other disciplines, such as architectural, structural, electrical, and civil.
  • Provide stamped, code-compliant permit documents for building department review.
  • Communicate daily with Iconergy staff to review the status of the project, highlight any concerns, and develop approaches to address them.
  • Support sales to coordinate, prepare and deliver information for scheduled project development meetings with client staff, or informational meetings with utility companies, government agencies, or other third parties as required for the project development or funding.

Special Site Considerations

Working in facilities requires a certain sensibility. For example, you may need to:

  • Be cognizant of your surroundings and on guard at all times.
  • Adhere to strict protocols established by the customer regarding interactions with occupants and management of your team’s equipment.
  • Be ready to adapt to changing situations and the unique considerations that exist in different parts of the facility.
  • Treat everyone that you encounter with dignity while completing your professional responsibilities efficiently.

The successful candidate’s background will look something like this:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Architectural Engineering. Other degrees may be considered with appropriate work experience.
  • Four or more years of work experience in HVAC design engineering. Additional MEP/controls design experience a plus.
  • Knowledge of all applicable building codes and standards, including, but not limited to: IBC, IMC, IPC, IFGC, IECC, ASHRAE, and NFPA.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD/Revit and Microsoft Office required.
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication (written and oral) in English.
  • Technically savvy with a thorough understanding of MEP systems and HVAC controls, including demonstrated efficiency and conservation experience.
  • Prior design-build retrofit and/or performance contracting experience is a plus.
  • Modeling software proficiency is a plus (eQUEST, Trane Trace, Energy Plus).

The candidate must also fulfill the following:

  • Have a Professional Engineering (PE) license and ability to acquire PE in other states (required).
  • Pass NCIC background check (required).
  • Pass an initial drug test and subsequent random drug tests (required).
  • Hold a valid driver’s license and provide your own mode of transportation (required).

This position will require you to frequently stand; walk; and reach with arms and/or hands. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, you will be regularly required to sit for long periods of time; talk or hear; perform fine motor, hand and finger skills in the use of a keyboard, telephone, or writing. You will also be required to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
